R.M.Jones Pharmacy
At R.M. Jones Pharmacy, we understand that taking emergency contraception can be a daunting experience — especially if it’s your first time. Whether you’re feeling nervous, unsure, or just looking for clear information, we’re here to offer support and guidance in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
One of the most common questions we hear is: “What happens after I take the morning after pill?” In this post, we’ll walk you through what to expect, how your body might react, and when to seek further help — including how ellaOne tablets work and how we can support you in-store.
First Things First – What Is the Morning After Pill?
Emergency contraception, often referred to as the “morning after pill”, is used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (such as a condom breaking or missing a pill). There are two main types available:
Levonorgestrel-based pills – Best taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
ellaOne tablets – A newer option that can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after.
Both types are available from your local pharmacy without a prescription, subject to a short and confidential consultation with the pharmacist.

How Do ellaOne Tablets Work?
ellaOne tablets contain ulipristal acetate, which works by delaying ovulation. If ovulation has already occurred, the tablet may be less effective, which is why timing is crucial. It’s not an abortion pill and won’t work if you’re already pregnant.
You can take ellaOne with or without food, and it should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex for maximum effectiveness.
What to Expect After Taking ellaOne or Other Morning After Pills
Everyone’s body is different, so side effects can vary from person to person. Some people experience no symptoms at all, while others might notice one or more of the following:
1. Changes to Your Period
This is one of the most common effects. Your next period might be:
-
Earlier or later than usual
-
Heavier, lighter, or longer than normal
-
Slightly more painful than you’re used to
Don’t panic — this is normal. Most people will still get their period within a week of the expected date. If it’s more than 7 days late, or unusually light, it’s worth taking a pregnancy test to be sure.
2. Nausea or Mild Stomach Upset
Some women feel slightly nauseous after taking the tablet. It usually passes quickly. However, if you vomit within 3 hours of taking ellaOne, you’ll need to take another dose, as the tablet may not have had time to work.
3. Headaches, Dizziness, or Tiredness
These are temporary and typically mild. If you feel very unwell or symptoms persist, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
4. Tender Breasts or Mood Changes
You may feel similar to how you do just before your period — bloated, emotional, or tired. Again, these side effects are short-lived and should pass on their own.
When Should You Seek Further Help?
While side effects are usually mild, you should speak to a healthcare professional if:
-
You vomit within 3 hours of taking the pill
-
Your period is more than 7 days late
-
You experience unusual abdominal pain or prolonged bleeding
-
You think you may already be pregnant
At R.M. Jones Pharmacy, we’re here to support you after you’ve taken emergency contraception. If you’re unsure about symptoms or simply need reassurance, we’re happy to help in complete confidence.

Can You Use Emergency Contraception More Than Once?
Yes, you can use emergency contraception more than once in your lifetime, but it shouldn’t be your regular method of birth control. ellaOne tablets are safe for occasional use, but repeated use within the same menstrual cycle may reduce effectiveness and lead to more frequent cycle disruption.
If you find yourself needing emergency contraception often, we can discuss more suitable long-term contraceptive options or refer you to a local clinic for additional support.
